Black Woman (Shanachie, 1988) Former background singer for Bob Marley (along with Rita Marley and Marcia Griffiths), Judy Mowatt shows that she can not only sing but also write some nice tunes. While little here will knock you out of your socks, Black Woman is consistently solid -- emotional, cultural, and spiritual. These songs aren't heavy roots; instead, they're light and airy (aided by Freddie McGregor's guiding hand) with an almost gospel sound at times -- particularly "Sisters' Chant" -- and her moving tribute to Bob Marley, "Joseph." More traditional roots come in the form of "Strength to Go Through," "Slave Queen," and the title track. Mowatt can't resist, however, covering 3 Marley tunes -- "Concrete Jungle," "Put It On," and "Down in the Valley" -- as well as Freddie McGregor's "Zion Chant," giving the album an air of unoriginality. Still, Black Woman is a cohesive, righteous statement of strength and resilience. |
