Termination Dub (Blood & Fire, 1996) Although he sang and produced many vocalists, it is his instrumental and dub productions for which Glen Brown is most well known. Termination Dub features the cream of his crop, mixed by the incomparable King Tubby. This is textbook dub: hard-edged, echoing effects, heavy bass, but while more marginal dub gets stale after a while, the material on Termination Dub remains fresh, lively, and hard-hitting. People familiar with the Grafton 4x4 album might recognize the rhythm on "Wicked Can't Run This Dub" and "Melodica International" from "Keepers of the Castle." Several other tracks included here are dubs of tunes from Blood & Fire's Sylford Walker/Welton Irie album Lamb's Bread International: "Termination Dub" rides the "Give Thanks and Praise to Jah" rhythm (AKA "Dirty Harry"), "Leggo the Herb Man Dub" is a dub of "Lambs Bread International" ("Save Our Dub" uses the same music), "Dub Universal" dubs "Eternal Day," and both "Assack Lawn" dubs are takes on "Cleanliness Is Godliness" (Version 1 with vocals and Version 2 without). Confusingly, "Lambs Bread Dubwise" isn't a dub of Walker's "Lambs Bread," nor is it a dub of Brown's own "Lambsbread," but rather a third option: a rambling, mediocre melodica instrumental. Otherwise, most of the material here is top-notch. |
