Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen - Hot To Trot (Best Of)
|
When I first heard the name Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen the only thing I could think of was getting stoned. I was not too far from the truth. “Hot To Trot” is a 17 track best of CD collection that puts together nicely a cult music phenomenon comparable to the jam bands of today. This music, heavily influenced by country and just enough rock and honky-tonk in the mixture, was able to pull over another group of listeners that was more hip than the straight country crowd was. They were the hippies and stoners, whom were a little high, but more open. They also had a tendency to cut loose and let their hair down a lot quicker than your average music fan. Regardless of all that, they sure were a loyal and mellow bunch that enjoyed and appreciated good music, without tearing a place apart or getting anyone hurt at a live performance. In addition, these folks were knowledgeable fans regardless of their chemical dependencies. Tunes with titles like “Lost in the Ozone” and “Seeds and Stems (again)” sure told the story.
Commander Cody aka George Frayne had a tight boogie band that could keep pace with any of his equals. You will find nothing but great music on this CD, no filler or deadbeats. Not bad for a band that never reached the levels of superstardom and fame now is it? Who needs those dizzying heights when you have loyal listeners that really appreciate your art form? All they had to do was show up, play hard, and breathe in all the fumes of the burning hemp and they were set for the evening. You see, studio recordings for a band like this were like a practice session, it is when they played live when you would get the real deal. All the fun and improvisation was an essential ingredient to their act and it was a contributing factor to their success live and in the studio.
The kicked back horns in “Riot in Cell Block #9” are an accurate portrayal of their attitude, they could care less if the world was falling apart around them because they were having fun and jamming! What stoked my fire and made my day was their version of the ‘60s hit “Hot Rod Lincoln.” Darn tootin’! These boys smoked it, musically that is, and probably the other stuff too. This is great party music. Give it a spin and let your cares of the day melt away, or go up in a puff of smoke, which ever the case may be. Y’all best get on down to the local store and “Git’ It” while it’s hot.
