Lorraine Leckie - 8 Pretty Songs

Lorraine Leckie - 8 Pretty Songs Lorraine Leckie sings her 8 Pretty Songs with no intention of being subtle. “Black Shrouds” and “Emptiness” are some of the more to the point tracks. With lines like “I don’t believe in fairy tales, the princess was insane,” it was enough for me to put the mental brakes on and take notice. So this is what we call pretty? I guess it all depends on what the word means for you.

This woman is a poet with a guitar, and one that explores the darker side of humanity with a trace of irony and sarcastic humor lingering on the fringes of each track. I think her lyrics and the way she delivers them are what stand out on this release. It was not too fond of her voice at first listen, and then it seemed to fit well with the music and lyrics after a fashion. One look at the titles for the songs on this CD and you may think this is a page out of the book of a Lou Reed or even Edgar Allan Poe. The Poe inference may sound a little drastic, but he did come to mind. I have to admit, by fourth or fifth song Leckie’s off key vocalizations grated on my nerves a bit. In the end, the lyrical content won me over and kept me interested along with her guitar playing.

This is not the kind of album I would have playing at dinner mind you…it is too introspective and intense. If you are in a funky and off kilter mood give this a spin, it will validate all of your feelings. This will take more than one listen for it to grow on you, give it a chance though. It certainly is refreshingly different, and that is a good thing in a world of manufactured sounds and phony personalities. At least you know what you are getting with Lorraine Leckie, the real deal.
