Jaco Pastorious Big Band - Word Of Mouth Revisited
|
It goes without saying how important bassist Jaco Pastorious has been to the cultivation of the progressive jazz fusion movement. His contributions have influenced many other artists over the years and continue to do so.
Word Of Mouth Revisited is a fantastic tribute to the artist and his craft. Many of today’s best bass players such as Gerald Veasley and Marcus Miller, including the honored artist himself, plus many other stellar players (see the staggering credits) are featured on the generous CD, which encompasses twenty tracks. Everyone involved does a fine job representing his music.
Mary Pastorious, Jaco’s daughter, writes a touching tribute to her father in a press release that accompanied this CD. She tells of a man that was her daddy, a loving and caring person that was misunderstood. Jaco’s life was cut short by a disease called manic depression. The drugs did not kill him; it was a powerful disease that was not fully comprehended at the time of his passing. Deeply moved by Mary’s words, she helped me to understand the complexity of the man behind the music.
Not only is the music in spectacular SACD format for optimum listening pleasure, it offers other artists’ interpretations of the Pastorious recorded legacy, which is all together quite a treat if you’re a jazz lover. There is some multimedia included with the disc and a direct link to the Heads Up website that offers some interviews with the contributing artists. There are a few brief tracks of Jaco talking in between songs, which adds some realistic value to the entire project. It all really hits home when you hear his voice. This is without a doubt one of the classiest and most richly recorded tribute albums I have ever heard before. Just when I have had it up to my eyeballs with tributes, one like this comes along to help me to forget all the other disappointments I have heard this year. Bravo! Heads Up.
