Cosmonauti - Bikini Angel
|
I have been following Cosmonauti now for five years and every album I hear by them gets better. Bikini Angel marks the coming of age for this surf-instrumental band from Italy. I have become accustomed to their rockin’ surf sound and what I heard on the studio tracks on this CD was something entirely different. Their sound is softer yet more mature and refined, like The Shadows of yesteryear. You will hear twelve excellent arrangements played by some of the finest musicians the surf-instrumental genre has to offer, there is no question about it.
After a good run of rollicking instrumental ecstasy, they present to you some rousing live bonus tracks recorded in 1999 by the surfmeister himself Phil Dirt. His radio show is legendary in annals of surf music and he contributes a fine write up on the band, which serves as a tribute their talent.
Although I was caught by surprise by the sound on the studio cuts, I found it very satisfying to hear them playing something different and more complex this time out. In a style that is normally cut and dried and simplistic, this group has managed to outdo themselves and record a classic rendering of traditional surf-instrumental music that will have you grinning from ear to ear.
