Abby Dobson - Soul Stories

 Abby Dobson tells Soul Stories “Deeply” and “Unconditionally” on her new release. I love when albums have titles that you can use to explain the feelings behind the music. After all, that is what a title is meant to prompt. In this case, Dobson makes it easy for a potential listener to look into the emotional motivations in the music.
Dobson is a singer with the heart of a lion and the soul of diva. Her purpose is to tell her story through the music and get you in an eternal groove. She sings about the life of a woman that is passionate and graceful enough to handle herself in any situation. The music propels and compels her to pour her heart out into each funky, rhythm and blues filled track. This music borders on crossing over to hip-hop at times. It teeters right on the edge and I am ever so glad it did not spill over into that realm. The pop elements manage to keep the music foundation of funk and soul influences stable without too much compromise.
This woman has a very strong voice that will take her far and no doubt in any direction she chooses to go. Six songs were enough to convince me that I would like to hear more. I am very interested to see how her career develops and what musical direction she will decide to make her home. If she adopts this style for future recordings, it will serve her well, although I think it would be to her benefit to explore jazz and blues for a wider more diversified audience.
