 Geoff Tate - Self-Titled

Geoff Tate - Self-Titled The timing of this DVD was perfect as I will be going to see Geoff Tate and his band mates Queensryche perform at the end of October.

This superlative self-titled solo album is now available in wondrously crisp DVD Audio. It is a revelation in audio surround sound experience. It reminds me of the bite of a cool Fall morning and how it envelopes your entire being. I noticed the difference in sound immediately once the lead off track “Flood” kicked in. There is a huge difference in the separation of instruments and vocals in comparison to the CD format. “Helpless” is the best melody hook filled track and an obvious contender for a single release. Now it sounds better than ever, just like every track does on this album in this stunning format. One of the best examples in sound improvement is “Over Me.” It starts off in overdrive with guitars that pounce on your ears for about a minute then the volume change is strikingly obvious as the band gets pushed down so Tate’s voice is pressed to the front of the song, these are some of the features and qualities you not hear in the CD format.

The bonus video footage is an interview with Tate and clips from songs on the album. Looking like the elder rocker-professor wearing glasses and a buzz cut with a neatly trimmed beard, he explains how he wanted his solo album to be completely different from what he does with Queensryche and that he chose musicians from jazz and pop backgrounds to get his assorted sound on the album. He succeeded completely with his quest to create an album of original compositions. The discussion also covers the process of changing the master tapes over to the 5.1 surround sound and his concerns revolving around that changeover. In the end, he expresses how amazed he was with the outcome. Do not miss this release, it is commanding and pulsating rock music that will stay with you long after that shiny little disc stops spinning.
