Ithamara Koorax - Serenade In Blue
|
Ithamara Koorax's voice is as beautiful the picture of her face that dawns the cover of this CD. Koorax has been a major jazz star in Japan for over ten years now, surprised? Americans somehow miss the boat when it comes too young and beautiful Brazilian vocalists don't we? Well now it's time to take a good look at one the very best in the business. This woman can carry a tune. Whether it's in her native tongue or in English with an accent (which is very sexy by the way), she makes every note count with
a perfected delivery that adds body and flavor to each selection.
"Bonita" leads the disc off very appropriately, as it means pretty in Spanish. Pretty it most certainly is...heart, body, and soul. The classic "Moon River" will make your eyes moist (as that song always seems to) and add a sparkle to your senses, then fond memories will suddenly be relived once again. You will travel a wondrous journey back in time. Classic jazz tunes are so timeless and beautiful. Koorax gives them their due by making each one come alive again with a most effervescent style and approach.
A real student of music, Koorax began at a very early age (5), and gradually developed into the diva you will now hear on this superb CD. This is no smoky nightclub singer... it's Ithamara Koorax. The lady has class and a real sense of how to deliver the idiosyncrasies of a jazz number. Jazz is a complex and colorful palette of innuendo and storytelling that can only be interpreted properly by the right combinations of musicians and singers. That combination has to be perfectly synchronized, or it all falls apart quickly. Make no mistake, this is a standout group of songs that will surely be enjoyed by the true jazz lover in all of us.
The different tastes of Americana and Brazil combined makes for smooth and compatible transitions. Track seven is unique, it really sounds different than all the others. I believe a different mike was used to push Koorax's voice out front more. The change succeeds, as she really sounds quite accomplished, and curiously American. You have to listen closely to detect her Brazilian accent on that one particular song. Actually I believe that her voice is so strong and dominant that it really does sound much better when the instruments find their place behind her. This tactic allows a purposeful and effective push to take place, and it gives her the lead, which she never relinquishes during the song.
This CD was a real joy to partake in. One listen is simply not enough for such an incredible accomplishment. All of whom were involved with this project need to take a bow and a curtain call for this outstanding performance.
