 Edible Red - Self-Titled

Edible Red - Self-Titled Being a typical heterosexual American male, the first thought that came into my head was a sexual one when I saw the name of the group and looked at the cute little red headed lead singer Collette McLafferty. They could not think of a name for their group, so they decided on an audience participation night at a gig one night. Two guys (no surprise there) came up with the name Edible Red. Do I need to explain any further? I didn’t think so.

The music is another matter entirely. As with many of the releases that I hear, the first listen just did not cut the mustard, another listen right after the first was like a splash of cold water on my face. It was refreshingly invigorating and gratifying. McLafferety is an animated living doll. She is a literal ball of dynamic raw sexual energy. She comes delivered totally original and natural with no additives. That explanation may sound like advert on TV for some kind of food supplement or something, but it is the best way for me to explain what I heard and felt listening to this music.

Upon further reflection and aural processing, I realized that this group offers up quite variety of rock music. “Stay Down” is an overtly sensual song from a hot to trot girl with a boyfriend that is staying down, and I emphasize the word down. Its punky and brash rock with oodles and oodles of high-powered guitar soaked with the sweat of young lust. “Legally Insane” is a cacophonous track, and as insane musically as it lyrically. Then to drive right off the veritable musical tracks, the closer is a sweet ballad called “Religion In Times Square.” This band takes you through the emotional ringer and keeps comin’ straight at ya, with no intention of ever letting their foot of the gas. Listening to this CD was like taking a taxicab ride in NYC, it was quite an adventure.

The only criticism I can offer is that the production and sound could have been a little cleaner. I clearly understand that they are just starting out and need some more backing to get a sparkling recording done in the studio. Other than that, its edible, red, and it rocks, that is enough for me.
