Jimmy Thackery & Tab Benoit - Whiskey Store

Jimmy Thackery & Tab Benoit - Whiskey Store Dam it! This blues-rock is so good I do not know where to start. Well first, you can take one look at whom the players are and your jaw will drop to floor, you will begin to drool, and then you will start to envision what these two blues brothers sound like together.

Jimmy Thackery and Tab Benoit, two legends from different sides of the fence, get down and dirty with the blues on “Whiskey Store.” Ummm…does it get any better than that? Well, not really. This combination not only works, it is magical.

Just as it says in the liner notes, Thackery was tearin’ it up on the East coast when this kid from Texas went on tour to open for The Nighthawks; his name was Stevie Ray Vaughan…you know the story. Jimmy goes back to those days and so does his partner Tab Benoit, who has made some of his own history over the years as a top-flight respected bluesman. Benoit and Thackery are co-owners of the whiskey store. Now if those two gifted guitar slingers ain’t enough to get all you riled up, then Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton, the rhythm section extraordinaire of Double Trouble, Reese Wynans’ keyboards, and the incredible Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica thrown into the mix should perk your ears up a bit and set your feet into motion. My dear lord, is this the blues or what? This is some killer kick ass blues-rock people.

Now does “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” sound like a blues song? I love the words and the music, it’s a typical humor filled affair with searing guitar licks and whiskey soaked vocals. Thackery not only plays a mean six-string, he sings with the power and forcefulness of B.B. King. Benoit’s playing is right on the money as well, he is one of the best and a great vocalist to boot. The only song that was out of place was The Rolling Stones classic “Last Time.” Some rock songs just do not sound right when a bluesman tries to mold it into their own thing. Out of 11 songs, I really enjoyed 10. Now that is not a bad ratio. This one is an ace in the hole by all accounts and from what I heard you should not hesitate a second if ya love the da blues, get it.
