Various - Live From Bonnaro - June 21, 22, 23 2002 Music Festival

 Bonnaroo, developed and sponsored by New Orleans' Superfly Presents, attracted an unprecedented 70,000 music fans for a first time event in June of this year. The “out of the box” thinking by the people that organized the event and the fan base helped to make this an enormous success. It sold out in a matter of days with just word of mouth and some e-mail promos, amazing. Held on an enormous breadth of Tennessee farmland, the event captured the imagination of the jamband culture. “Live From Bonnaro” is a two-disc set that documents highlights of the three days with some of the worlds best doing what they do best, jam and improvise in a live setting. This is also dedicated to Michael Houser of Widespread Panic, the good lord saw to it to end his time with us and move him on to a higher purpose in August.
Some of this music was excellent and some did not tickle my fancy at all. The biggest disappoint was Trey Anastasio playing “Last Tube.” It sounded like misdirected cacophony and I became very irritated and moved on to the next track. I know not all of his music must be as strange as what I heard, and he is a great guitarist. It was not a good introduction to what he is about as far as I can tell. I found most of the material on both CDs very pleasing with a nice variety though. Where else can you find music by The String Cheese Incident and Gov’t Mule, both being great bands, on the same album? I thought Galactic was awesome, I would like to hear more of their music, Moe and Ween also kicked up some dust and got the crowd all pumped up.
Not only does this provide a documentary to musical history that I am sure will continue to grow for many years to come, it is also a nice introduction to an eclectic group of bands that you may otherwise would not have had the opportunity to hear. I highly recommend this experience for those listeners that like improvisational rock music.
