tvfordogs - Heavy Denver (Advance Pressing)
|
The thought provoking name “tvfordogs” comes from a band member that witnessed a barbecue in Brazil of all things. What happens is the dog’s line up and then stare, mesmerized as if the barbecue was a TV set while the sweet-smelling piece of meat cooks. This has to be one of the most inventive uses of a life situation for a group name that I have ever come across. Looking at the name of the band gave me immediate thoughts that this band must be a lot of fun to listen to and watch. Well, I have not seen them play live, but I can tell you this…listening to them invokes a sense of warmth and dreaminess as they weave their alternative pop-rock spell upon you.
They can rock firm and swift or change your mood with a more relaxed and slower pace without a glitch. For example, it is like flicking the proverbial internal switch…on the opening track “Patient Pilgrim,” they cut loose and knock your socks off with a full-blown rocker whereby on “Come to My Senses” they kick it back a few notches on the decibel level and soothe you with a hypnotic guitar and pleasant vocalizations. “Keep It Coming” is a fantastic example of their range and talent as a unit that is firing all four cylinders. Then to take you down a different road they give you some punk angst on “To Be the First.” I have to tell you, somebody listened to Johnny Rotten and The Sex Pistols at some point in their life, they just had to. The attitude and sound of that song is just too reminiscent of the punk legends. This band offers a stunningly spellbinding sound that they produce with pinpoint precision, and every track has its own particular personality. After taking in tracks 1-6, # 7 travels a completely different musical path; it is like a stroll into another world. Like a beautifully layered and lush instrumental composition that is more appropriate for a soundtrack than a rock album, it sweeps you away for a few moments. This only demonstrates their wherewithal as an all-around band that can serve up any menu of music that they so desire. I really respect that attitude and approach.
Trust me, you will not have a minute to daydream or become bored listening to tvfordogs. This CD is concrete proof that TV is for dogs and music is for humans.
