 The jazz idiom is famous for initiating a gathering of great players for unforgettable sessions. In 1978, four of the best in the business gathered to combine their talents for a show that would be a night to remember forever. It is 2002, and Fantasy Jazz felt it was appropriate to document this epic jazz achievement once again in a newly remastered form.
The sound is as good as it gets and the music extraordinary on
“Carnaval.” Ron Carter’s bass in particular really stands out on this release. Jazz players have an ability to leave their egos at that the door and let the music happen without any pretenses whatsoever. Albums like this document that beautifully.
Ron Carter, Hank Jones, Sadao Watanabe, and Tony Williams are swept away, just as the crowd is, by the evening’s ambiance and the many colors of the jazz palette that influence each individual. They are no doubt individuals first, and that is what makes their music so unique and special. When they so effortlessly combine their talent, it becomes one, or a sum of the parts that makes up a breathtaking musical whole. It is never easy for me to understand how this happens...it is simply the magic and beauty of jazz at work.
