Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Band - Things To Come

Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Band - Things To Come The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Band is a splendid tribute organized by trumpeter and Gillespie sideman Jon Faddis. Recorded to celebrate the music of the great jazz icon, “Things to Come” is a live recording made in September of 2000 at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild (all proceeds from the sale of this disc go directly to the Craftsmen's Guild's minority-focused arts and learning center). Featuring various band alumni, the album revisits originals and offers the attentive listener updated arrangements and compositions that connect with the late pioneering master.

This spirited live recording lends even more weight to this legend and his work. It is not Dizzy himself, but it certainly is great jazz music performed by some of the very best musicians in the world. Many treasure Gillespie’s music, and this band of all-stars gives some of his best material a workout that even Dizzy himself would have respected. If you are a discerning jazz listener, you will find a lot of joy in this CD. As one would expect, there is plentiful amounts of music on this CD. In addition, the immortal jazz classic “Night In Tunisia” runs for over nine minutes, making certain that you will have time to perhaps trigger some old memories and appreciate the man’s absence from music.

Jazz played live is a beautiful thing to witness. When music from the timeless catalog of Dizzy Gillespie receives so much respect and love, it makes it all that much sweeter and wonderful to digest.
