Phil Risen - Things Are Different Now
|
I found myself unable to convey my feelings as quickly and readily as I normally do while listening to this CD. It was almost like having writers block, but in a good way. Irregardless, this music is easily transmittable by the artist in several different ways. Phil Risen’s voice is what draws you in, and it doesn’t let you go for a second. The rythms and hooks on the musical side make it that much more appealing. It seems this entire album is made up of possible hit singles. It is well-built pop and rock, with heavier leanings towards pop. Keep in mind that there is a broad spectrum of styles and muscality found in each and every song to keep you interested. If you like to rock, enjoy smooth and moving lyrics, or pop inflected upbeat dancable tunes, its all here for you on “Things Are Different Now.”
The lyrics are a lot heavier than the music itself. He manages to keep things on the lighter side concering the actual music with an all-around mood and vibe that remains pleasant and uplifting. On the track “One Track Mind” Phil sings-“Little Miss Muffett’s found another guy, kissed the little boys goodbye, lost it in his bed like Little Bo Peep, got a one-track mind.” Then the song builds on that first verse and explains how the sweet little girl turns into a Hollywood starlet and how she craves all the attention she is getting. All of the songs have a good storyline to keep you thinking. Its as if the music is a subtle mask to all the feelings coming out on each track. Listen closely to all the words in every song, you won’t miss the point, believe me.
With such an excellent release things in the world of music could be different now. At least in Phil Risen’s world they are.
