Crosby, Stills and Nash - Crosby, Stills and Nash/ Daylight Again

Crosby, Stills and Nash - Crosby, Stills and Nash/ Daylight Again Rhino has remastered and repackaged two classic Crosby, Stills, and Nash recordings. The groundbreaking self-titled debut and Daylight Again with its interesting cover design, sound magnificent now reformatted in HDCD.

The first album put together members from three very successful bands, David Crosby (The Byrds), Graham Nash (The Hollies), and Stephen Stills (Buffalo Springfield). Mama Cass arranged for the three men to meet and begin their magical journey. Cass knew once they sat down to sing and play together it would be like heaven, the men clicked, and the rest is history. Never is that magic and magnificence more apparent than on their stunning debut. I have heard this album on CD and 180-gram vinyl, but never have I listened to it in such clear and resounding definition as this. This recording never grows old, it sounds better ever time I hear it and honestly, there is not a bad track on it. “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” has to be one of the greatest songs ever recorded. This trio took folk-rock to heights that were so exhilarating that they jumpstarted one of its largest growth spurts since its inception. When does “Wooden Ships” or “Long Time Gone” ever sound tired or old? It never does to me and now it has a renewed life. The sparks that were flying when it was first committed to tape in the studio are reignited and as real and prolific today as when it defined a new generation. This music brings you right there when it all happened. They made some incredible music for a debut album.

Each CD has four bonus tracks; some are good others are in their basic raw demo form. You get a glimpse of what would come on their next album when Neil Young would join the band on Déjà Vu. An unfinished “Teach Your Children” sounds a bit ruff around the edges before reaching its final stages and mix down. It gives you some insight into the bands process and progression. The booklets that accompany each CD have some nice write-ups, pictures, and all the lyrics to each song, so the package is quite complete.

Crosby - Daylight Again (1982)Daylight Again is a more modern and matured CSN, nevertheless just as compelling. “Southern Cross” is one of the more recognizable recordings by the trio and it is still a staple on many radio stations today. It sounds better than ever now. The bonus tracks on this album are much better than the first album and they rock as well. This CSN had some punch and the softer folk songs take a back seat at times as the boy’s show how they can crank up the volume with the best of them. Demos of “Might As Well Have A Good Time” and “Raise A Voice” exhibit that 10 years after their debut, they could sound pretty darn good even with a track in its most rudimentary form. Experience is always the best teacher as they had released four albums prior to this one and it was a five-year pause before it hit the shelves, but well worth the wait. It stands as one of their greatest achievements and no coincidence that it was one of the first earmarked for remastering.

I am sure once music fans get their hands on the two great recordings they will be wondering when all of the other albums will be coming out as well. CSN and CSNY stand as one of the more popular and important collaborations of rock music and its culture. One listen to their powerful debut and hearing their development ten years on is all the proof you need.
