Isaac Hayes - Ultimate Isaac Hayes: Can You Dig It?
|
Did you ever wonder why you never hear the name Isaac Hayes mentioned with all the greats, such as Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin? I think the man’s importance to music as a whole is apparent, even so, I believe that the word underrated applies here.
Ultimate Isaac Hayes: Can You Dig It? should set the record straight. With two generous CDs and one bonus DVD, this makes a great package to enjoy the Hayes hot buttered soul.
Hayes has an amazing breadth of material to enjoy and the more I hear his music, the more I recognize his importance to soul and pop music. I realize there are plenty of people out there that appreciate his art as I do; however, I feel that his leadership and incredible servitude to the industry and the genre have been overlooked somewhat. This is unfortunate but this set gives me hope things will change in that particular aspect of his career.
“Theme From Shaft” is one of my all time favorite tracks and his rendition of “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” stands as a watershed in his career right alongside the movie soundtrack work. I do not think I have ever heard such a true to life and down to earth version of “By The Time I Get To Phoenix” before. I mean this man defined what soul was; he typified it and lived it in every song performed, in the studio or on stage.
The footage on the bonus DVD is quite good as well, it definitely makes for a nice capping of the two discs, although its just a taste of what it was to see Hayes perform live, 4 songs give you an adequate overview of his charisma and the power he had over an audience. I will reach for this often when I want to get down and be soulful, or for that matter to hear some great music.
